Brief History:
There were five different
Methodist Episcopal congregations in Preston township: Tallmanville (1831),
Hines Corners [Orson] (1849), Stanton Hill [Shehawken] (1855), Lake Como
(1863), South Preston (1887). This class
was organized about 1855 with H.P. Stanton as the class leader. The schoolhouse was used for worship until
the church building was erected. The building was the dream of Jane Woodmansee Sanford. Her
leadership inspired the community, and in 1883 construction was begun on land
donated by A. R. Dix. It appears that Mr. Dix may have actually donated a
lot for a new school on the condition that the Methodists could have the old
school lot on which to erect their building.
The first trustees were Mr. Dix, H. P. Stanton, E. J.
Sanford, S. E. Stanton, and F. E. Kilpatrick, Henry P. Stanton supervised the
building of the church. Stone for the
foundation was quarried on the farm of F. C. Haynes and the carpentry work
directed by Altman Fuller. In September of 1883 the shell of the new church was
completed. Jane Woodmansee Sanford died unexpectedly of pneumonia and her
funeral was the first service held in the church. Dedication was October 27,
1883. The building was renovated in

Stanton enabled the church to completely renovate the interior in 1998.
