Brief History:
The Methodist Episcopal
Church was the first religious denomination organized in the Mill Hall area.
Members
erected their first meeting place in 1831 on the hill at the southeast end of
the present borough on ground donated by Frank Platt, and later owned by Mrs.
Michael Flanigan. A second church building was erected on the
east side of Fishing Creek in 1855, where the present church building now
stands. It was a 2-story building made of stone and frame erected on land
donated by George Bressler.
By the year of 1905, the third
church was in the process of construction with the contract awarded to Griffith
Garrett of Rebersburg, and the building committee
working faithfully under the leadership of Rev. J.J. Resh. The building
committee consisted of Elmer Tevling, A.B. Painter, M.G. Coffey, B.J. Bowers,
William Hunter and Sutton Kreidler. On June 10, 1906, the dedication took place
with Charles Boswell delivering the dedicatory sermon. The sanctuary was built
on the second floor for a capacity of 300. It has 12 stained glass windows, and
the woodwork is cypress in natural finish.
In 1937, the sanctuary was
completely renovated in preparation for the 110th anniversary of
Methodism in Mill Hall. A week of special services began Sep. 28, 1941 under
