Methodists began meeting here informally
about 1868 in the house of Charles Snyder.
A congregation was formally organized in 1870, and in 1872 a wooden
church building was erected. In 1907 the
original building was moved to the rear of the lot to make room for the present
brick edifice, and the original given a brick veneer to become the social hall.
A small kitchen and several classrooms were added in 1938. This is the home church of missionary and

were purchased, the cornerstone was laid 9/20/1903, and the building was
dedicated 4/14/1904. This was at 1106

growing work, a basement for Sunday School rooms was later placed under the
church and a balcony was added to the sanctuary. Sensing the need for a whole new building,
the Ladies Aid Society purchased land at the corner of Orange and Orchard
Streets. Ground was finally broken for
the new church building 5/27/1956, and the structure was dedicated 6/23/1957.

Colonel Leonard Zimmerman was converted
under Jacob Albright and opened his Schuylkill County home for Evangelical
preachers in 1797. His daughter
Catherine married John George Zehner and settled at Summer Hill. In 1811, Catherine’s brother Rev. Leonard
Zimmerman preached in the Zehner log cabin, and a great revival led to the
beginning of the Summerhill Evangelical Church.
The original Evangelical church that stood
in the cemetery was built about 1847 and open to all denominations. It was also used by the Methodists until they
erected their own structure in 1882.
