It was in the 1870’s that West Huntingdon began to develop.  Before then, the borough limits stopped at 14th Street and only farms lay beyond.  The first house erected west of Fourteenth Street was built by George L.S. Baker (1840-1934), a licensed local preacher, who led the effort to establish a Methodist congregation in the area.  Mr. Baker lived his faith and two of his sons [Rev. Harry W. Baker (1863-1943) and Rev. Frank Kline Baker (1866-1957)] became Methodist preachers the California Conference.  The present church property was purchased in 1872, and a chapel was dedicated in 1876.  In 1877, the West Huntingdon ME Church became a separate charge.  The name was changed to the Second ME Church when the old chapel was remodeled and enlarged to include two Sunday School rooms.  In 1897 the name was changed to the Fifteenth Street ME Church.  The present sanctuary was erected in 1927 and the educational unit was added in 1974.
