1875,40 – brick
church building costing about $3500 has been erected
Brief History:
This congregation is a union of two
denominational traditions worshipping in a building erected by the
Methodists. A frame structure built near
the Mont Alto Iron Company in 1869 served the newly organized class of
Methodists until 1874, when a brick building was erected to meet the needs of
the growing congregation. A tower was
added in 1919, with a bell that was purchased from the Reformed Church with the
inscription “Praise God in His Holiness.”
Over the years a social hall, kitchen, educational unit and pastor’s
study have been added to the structure.
A United Brethren class had been organized
in Mont Alto in 1843 and eventually settled into a brick building erected a few blocks
to east in 1905.
In 1971 the Otterbein UMC (formerly United
Brethren) and Wesley UMC (formerly Methodist) congregations became a two-point
charge and in 2009 they united to form the present Mont Alto United Methodist
Church, worshipping in the former Methodist building.
