This congregation began with the
organization of a Ladies Aid Society on November 2, 1892. The members met at the home of the president,
then in a school house. In a few years a
Sunday School was started, men were allowed to join the organization, and the
work became a regular preaching appointment.
The sign on the church reads “BVU Church erected by LAS of BV July 8,
1894.”

Brief History:
The first Methodist preaching was done in
Hughesville in 1819. A class was organized
By Rev. Thomas Taneyhill in 1836, with George Rishell as class leader and
meeting in the schoolhouse. The
Methodist Episcopal Church of Hughesville was chartered by the State in 1843
and erected its first building in 1844 and a “rebuilt” structure in 1879. The present building was erected on the same
site and dedicated November 5, 1893. In
1926, the sanctuary was remodeled, and the Sunday School rooms and social hall
were added.
On January 1, 2018, Hughesville
Bethany and Hughesville Christ united to form a single congregation named The
Beacon and meeting in the former Christ UMC building.

while passing through Huntersville on the old Genesee Road from Muncy to Monroeton as early as 1800, it wasn’t until 1870 that a

The Evangelical work here was taken up in
1921 to care for the increasing number of persons moving into the borough from
the surrounding charges. Services were
first held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mont Mitcheltree, and then in the POSA
Hall. The work inconsistent until 1926,
when a b rick building at Broad and Monroe Streets was dedicated as a
church. Ground-breaking services for the
building at the present site were held August 27, 1950, and the structure was
dedicated September 9, 1951. The
adjoining Christian Education building was dedicated in 1961.

This building was erected in 1847. In 1953 a basement and new foundation were
prepared and the building was moved across the driveway to its present
location. The building has also been
known as the Franklin Church (after the township) and the Lyons Church (after
the family which gave the land). The
congregation originally worshiped in the Chestnut Grove Church, one mile north
of PA 442 on the east side of the road to Lairdsville. When the building was erected at Pine Summit,
the Chestnut Grove structure was moved to the west side of the road and used as
a schoolhouse. There are traces of the
cemetery in the triangle of ground that was the site of the Chestnut Grove
Church.
