Northern Tier Pastors
These are pastors
who served northern tier Pennsylvania Methodist churches before 1852 when the
Wyoming Conference was formed or before 1962, when the conference boundaries were
adjusted to match state lines and those remaining Pennsylvania churches entered
the Central Pennsylvania Conference. The
dates/charges they served involving post-2010 Susquehanna Conference territory
are highlighted in bold face type. Pastors who transitioned into the Wyoming
Conference in 1852 or the Central Pennsylvania Conference in 1962 appear in
those data bases and so do NOT appear in this data base.
Prior to 1852 the
eastern northern Pennsylvania charges were served variously by the Baltimore and
Philadelphia Conferences (prior to 1810), the Genesee Conference (1810-1829),
and the Oneida Conference (1829-1852).
Prior
to 1962 the more western charges were served by conferences based in New York
state – mainly the Genesee Conference (Potter and western Tioga counties) and
Central New York Conference (Bradford and eastern Tioga counties).
Notes:
This region was involved in several boundary changes before joining the Central
Pennsylvania Conference in 1962.
(1)
The
Genesee Conference was split from the Philadelphia Conference in 1810 and
became the mother conference for the area from which all the other conferences
were split off. It still existed in 1962
– except that from 1872-76, for one quadrennium, it was called the Western New
York Conference.
(2)
The
Oneida Conference was split off from the Genesee Conference in 1829, and the
Wyoming Conference and Central New York Conference were split off from the
Oneida Conference in 1852 and 1868 respectively. Pastors who transferred from the Oneida
Conference into the newly-formed Wyoming Conference in 1852 do NOT appear in
this list and appear in the “regular” Wyoming Conference list.
(3)
The
East Genesee Conference was split off from the Genesee Conference in 1848 and
dissolved in 1872 when it was split between the Genesee [then temporarily
called Western New York] Conference and Central New York Conference.
(4)
In
1876, the Pennsylvania churches east of US 15 were placed in the Genesee
Conference. [Officially, this is what happened in 1876: The East Genesee
Conference was restored, and then it was immediately joined to the Western New
York Conference to re-form the Genesee Conference, essentially as it had been
in 1848 when the East Genesee Conference was split off.]
(5)
In
1880, the Pennsylvania churches east of US 15 were returned to the Central New
York Conference.
The
northern tier churches therefore were generally served as follows:
1810-1848 Genesee Conference
[1829-1852 split between Genesee Conference
and Oneida Conference]
1848-1872 East Genesee Conference
1872-1876 split between Genesee [Western New York]
Conference and Central New York Conference
1876-1880 Genesee Conference
1880-1962 split between Genesee Conference and
Central New York Conference

1860 located
Note: Some sources list hus birthplace as Wayne
County PA. Henry T. Avery moved to Iowa,
where there is no record that he served as a pastor. Chaffee’s 1904 History of the Wyoming
Conference, page 775, states that H.T. Avery served Ulster-Athens 1859-60 but
left in mid-year “because of discouragements.”
This agrees with his 1860 location, but not with printed records of the
East Genesee Conference. There was a
Rev. H.T. Avery in the Methodist Protestant Church in Oklahoma in the late
1800’s. The widowed second Mrs. Avery
married [1892] a Mr. Edgar Bowen (1837-1901) and then [1907] a Rev. Roswell
Benjamin Moore (1834-1909), affiliation unknown.

This article appeared in the 4/3/1854 New
York Herald, morning edition, page 2.
The Senate of Pennsylvania did honor to itself in the passage of
the divorce of Mrs. Susan A. Bronson, from her brutal husband, Samuel M
Bronson. The lady in question is the daughter of a Methodist clergyman in the
State of New York, and is represented as not only amiable, but moral and
intelligent.
She became enamored with Bronson, and after a brief courtship, consented to
become his wife. It was
not long, however, before this act was regretted. About two years since, the
parties left Now York for Tioga County, Pennsylvania, where Bronson was
employed as a preacher of the gospel. After a residence of ten months, the
mother of Mrs. Bronson visited them. She soon discovered that her daughter was
in a decline. The conduct of Bronson. as testified to by the mother, was of
such a
character as to shock the heart of the most callous wretch The details of his
brutal treatment are harrowing to human nature, and totally unfit for
publication. The mother remonstrated with Bronson, but it was of no avail. Her
daughter on the occasion was found senseless, covered with blood, and carrying
upon her person some eight or nine black and blue spots. These facts became
known to the people when Mrs. Bronson was taken from the clutches of the brutal
wretch and sent to her friends in New York, where she now remains. Bronson fled, and has not since been heard
from.
Note2: Is it possible the NY/PA 1848-1850 Rev. Samuel M. Bronson
and the IA/MN 1859-1888 Rev. Samuel M. Bronson are two different people?
