*Because of his controversial social positions and activities, the Conference presented eight “reasons” [not “charges” – reportedly to prevent a church trial] declaring him unappointable, and this was upheld by a majority vote of the clergy.  A 13-year process of suits and charges in the civil courts ultimately resulted in a favorable settlement for Alberts.]  His performing a marriage ceremony between two male members of his congregation was the definitive issue.  He was an early champion of LGBT rights.

Note:  In 2019 William E. Alberts and his second wife were living in Canton MA.  His first marriage ended in divorce.  He is the author of several controversial books and of the 2014 collection of his writings The Counterpunching Minister (who could not be “preyed” away).

Smith (1827-1902) of the New England Conference and the grandfather of Katherine Brittain Leidy, wife of George Leidy.  A biographical sketch appears in Armstrong’s The Old Baltimore Conference, page 336.

Alem Brittain is supposedly a second cousin to Bishop Thomas Bowman, the bishop’s mother Sarah Brittain being a cousin to Alem’s father John Brittain.  He apparently is the namesake of Alem Brittain Mettler (1844-1917) of the Rock River Conference and Alem Brittain Shipman (1845-1906) of the Des Moines Conference.

Note: Melville C. Brittain is the son of Alem M. Brittain.  He appears also to be known as Melton C. Brittain.  Local sources report that he served Dillsburg 1865-66 and State College 9/1891-3/1892.  Mrs. Brittain [nee Randolph] was the widow of a Mr. William H. Watson, Jr., who died circa 1855; she is buried in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Baltimore MD – but neither of her husbands are

The following is taken from the 1914 History of Strafford County, New Hampshire by John Scales: In 1871, Rev. M. C. Brittain, who had been transferred from the Baltimore Conference, was stationed at Dover.  Owing to habits of intemperance, which he said he had formed in the navy, in which he had served as a chaplain, he resigned the charge at the request of the official board and the presiding elder in December.  He removed from the city soon after his resignation.  The church was deeply affected with grief at this unfortunate event, but treated Mr. Brittain with the greatest kindness, and bore with him some time with charitable hopes of his reformation, which was of no avail, notwithstanding his strong promises and feeble efforts.

Mrs. Brittain was the widow of a Mr. William H. Watson Jr.
