PREFACE
MINUTES OF THE U. B. IN CHRIST
who being bound together
in love to work out their soul’s salvation, to call sinners
to repentance, and to build up His saints in the most holy faith, in Christ
Jesus,
their Redeemer.
P.S. May the great God preserve the childlike
spirit in the church of the United
Brethren in Christ, as he did among the old brethren.
TRANSCRIBER’S PREFACE.
The
task of transcribing the minutes of the Pennsylvania Annual Conference out
of the old and faded records, covering a period of sixty-eight years, was no
easy
one. But we undertook to do it, and now it is done, making them readable and
access-
able to all who may be interested in these valuable old records. We take great
plea-
sure in presenting herewith to the conference the fruit of our labors.
The
minutes of the conference held from 1800 to 1837 inclusive, and those of
the year 1839, were written in the German language, and in the deciphering of
the
scrip and in the translation of the same we were greatly assisted by brother J.
C.
Beckert, of Dallastown, Pa. We are also indebted to Rev. G. W. M. Rigor, Bishop
J.
Dickson, and the Pennsylvania Conference, through whom we obtained access to
the
original records.
Our work may not be beyond criticism, and may
not be altogether free from typo-
graphical errors, but we have done our best with the copy furnished us, much of
which was poorly written and some of which was considerably faded.
Yours
Fraternally,
Shamokin, Pa., Feb. 16, 1901.

September 25, 1800
On the 25th
of September, 1800, the following brethren came together at Peter
Kemp’s house, Frederick Co., Md.:
William Otterbein, John Hershey, Christian Crum,
George Pfrimmer, Christian Newcomer,
Jacob Geisinger, Adam Lehman, Martin Boehm, Abraham Troxel, Henry Crum, Henry
Boehm,
Dietrich Aurand, George A. Geeting, and Jacob
Baulus.
Each one of the preachers told his experience,
and declared anew that he was
willing to continue to preach with all earnestness, by the help of God, and to
his
glory.
1. Resolved that two preachers go to Smoke’s
(Shamokin) and see whether D.
Aurand is worthy to baptize and administer the Lord’s supper.
2. Resolved that the unprejudiced or unsectarian
preachers shall meet sometimes
annually to take counsel together, and consider
as to how they may best fill their
office, that the church of Christ may be built up, sinners converted, and God
be
glorified.
3. To-day the conference was opened with prayer,
and the reading of a chapter,
followed with a short address by Brother Otterbein. The exercises closed with
prayer.
September 23, 1801
To-day we came together again at Peter Kemp’s
house, Fred-
crick Co., Md., in order to counsel together and instruct one another as to how
we
may best please God and be useful to our fellowmen in the future. The following
brethren were present: William Otterbein, Christian Newcomer, George A.
Geeting,
Jacob Geisinger, John Neidig, Thomas Winters, Abraham Mayer, David Snyder,
Matthias
Kessler, Abraham Hershey, Martin Boehm, Daniel Strickler. Peter Senseny, David
Long,
Frederick Schaffer, John Hershey, Ludwig Duckwald, Peter Kemp, Christian Crum,
and
Michael Thomas.
1. Otterbein delivered an address in which he
showed that our salvation depends
alone on Christ and his mercy. He who is here delivered from sin and party
spirit
ought to thank God. This was Otterbein’s opinion, and then each of the
preachers
told his experience.
2. A letter was read from Rev. George Pfrimmer,
and it was resolved not to send
a reply.
3. A letter was read from D. Aurand, of Smoke’s
or Shamokin, and it was re-
solved that Christian Newcomer should go and see him and tell him that his
wishes
were complied with.
4. To-day, the 24th, we came together again,
first the fourteenth chapter of
Revelation was read and then the conference sang and prayed. Then the question
was
asked whether each preacher was willing to preach the gospel, and whether he
was anx-
ious to live as he taught others. The answer given was yes, they were all
willing
to work according to their ability in the vineyard of the Lord by the grace of
God.
5. The question was asked who is willing to take
a circuit, and to serve the
preaching places given them. The following were willing: Christian Newcomer,
Michael
Thomas, Daniel Strickler, Frederick Schaffer, John Neidig, David Snyder,
Abraham
Hershey, Abraham Mayer, David Long, and Peter Kemp.
6. Resolved that each preacher shall give an
exhortation after each sermon to
those who may wish to embrace religion whoever they may be, if they are
determined
to consecrate themselves to God with all their hearts.
7. Resolved that the preachers be brief with
their sermons, and avoid all repi-
tition of words in preaching in prayer, unless they are constrained by the
Spirit
Of God, when it becomes their duty to do as God directs. O God, give us wisdom
and
understanding to do everything according to thy will.
8. To-day, at 9 o’clock we convened again. We
commenced the meeting with sing-
ing and earnest prayer that God might bless us with wisdom and understanding,
and
with heartfelt love to god, and with love to one another. Amen.
1
9. Resolved that our conference next year shall
be held at David Snyders, October
5th, 1803, and any preacher who can not attend shall write a letter.
10. Resolved that a big meeting shall be held at
Sleepy Creek on the last Sunday
of next August. Our present conference came to a close with earnest prayer,
which
the Lord in his mercy may grant for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

give
us preachers his love and grace so that we might live God and all mankind.
2. Each preacher told his experience as to how
he is getting along in preaching
and his desire for the future in his office, and they resolved to obtain all
necessary
help from God through prayer so that they might each on all humanity consider
others
better than themselves. May God give us grace to become real humble to the
glory of
God and the good of humanity.
3. Resolved that Valentine Flugel shall be
permitted to exhort the people to re-
pentance. May the lord bless him in his work.
4. Resolved that a letter be written to George

forgotten
by us preachers and hearers.

John Miller be allowed to ex-
hort and lead the people to repentance through God’s grace as much as he can.

the 14th verse to the end of the epistle, with great blessing. In the afternoon
the
proceedings of the conference were continued.
12. An effort was made to raise some money for
preachers. It came to nothing.
13. Resolved that when a preacher does something
that is wrong, or sins grievious-
ly, the preacher next to him shall go to see him and talk with him alone. If he
will
not hear him shall take with him one or two others, and if he will not hear
them
he shall be silenced until the next conference.
14. Resolved that George A. Geeting shall visit
the congregations of Frederick
circuit during the spring and fall.
15. Resolved that Christian Newcomer shall visit
Cumberland circuit each year two
times.
16.
Resolved that Martin Boehm shall visit the brethren beyond the Susquehanna
twice a year
*Note: The original transcription has September
26 instead of October 8.
2
17. Resolved that Jacob Baulus and Valentine
Baulus shall visit from house to
house in Middletown, Franklintown* and their vicinity.
18. It was further agreed that if one of our
elders or superintendents should die,
for instance Otterbein or Boehm, who are serving now, that another shall be
chosen in
his place. This is the wish of all preachers present, and desire that it shall
be
done. Peter Senseny, Ludwig Duckwald, John Neidig were given the permission to
baptize
and administer the Lord’s supper, with all that pertains thereto.
